My Non-Gardening New Year’s Resolution

Happy New Year!

In case you were wondering, my number one resolution for 2011: Surf more! Okay, so it’s not gardening, or snapping photos, or chasing down new blog posts (although those definitely made the list). To me, riding waves is the ultimate in outdoor living!

I started when I was 41 and am so lucky to be going strong at, ahem, 50. Women who surf like Belinda Baggs (walking the nose like a cat in this video I found on the super luscious blog called Aubrey Road) or Eve Fletcher of my hometown in Laguna Beach (who still surfs SanO into her 80s) are an inspiration to all of us surf betties.
Here’s Eve on a wave at San Onofre State Park and Beach in Southern California. (Eve is a longtime docent at the Hortense Miller Garden in town, which I plan to feature soon! Another example of how closely related surfing and gardening are if you love the outdoors!)
If you have a wave nearby, you might want to add “learn to surf
to your list of resolutions.

  1. You sound like my friend Carl, a San Diego native who landed here, 5000' above the high tide! But the relationship to downtime in nature, even wrestling with it a bit, is so related to good outdoor living & its design.
